While we’re all tightening our belts and getting ready for the impending crunch, you may be considering turning to the internet as a way to supplement your income. It works for thousands of people worldwide, and there’s no reason you can’t have your piece of the pie. Who knows, you might even become one of those lucky individuals that trades in the cubicle and your suit and tie for a laptop and your favorite pajamas.
The purpose of this article though, is to stress a couple of points for would-be online tycoons. Before you start on an internet venture at any level, it’s important to remember two things you’ve learned in the “real world” and realize how they apply to the World Wide Web:
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
It’s unfortunate, but true, that the internet is a scammer’s paradise. You can advertise most anything quickly and easily, to the world’s largest audience, and even build a false reputation for it with very little effort. If you have an email account, you’ve undoubtedly seen too many ads promising millions in income practically overnight, if you just invest $79.99 in the How to Guide. They are usually every bit as shady as they sound, so don’t be taken in.
You get out of it what you put into it.
There really is no magic formula that’s going to start bringing you income without some effort on your part, and generally speaking, the more effort you sow, the more rewards you’ll reap. This simple principle is true in almost every internet moneymaking opportunity.
If you start with those two points firmly planted in your mind, making a substantial income online is definitely possible. The first trick to success on the internet is finding a niche that works with your skill set. There are countless opportunities, and while many are viable, there may only be a few that match your personality and talents. There are pros and cons to each one, so it’s worth doing some serious research, to find what works best for you.
Consider where you can best apply your skills. Are you a fast typist? There are thousands of legitimate data entry jobs that you can do in your spare time, and they can pay well. Do you like to voice your opinion? Paid online surveys are a reality, but for most people they’re a better hobby than a job. Better yet, start a blog and ramble on about anything you like (or dislike). Then dedicate some of your page space to click through ads. A little experimentation will help you determine which services (AdSense, etc.) and what ads work best for your site.
If you have a well-honed skill, such as writing or graphic design, consider registering with freelancing sites and marketing your skills to a world-wide audience. Be sure you have resume and portfolio to show, and be prepared to spend a lot of time bidding – there are literally tens of thousands of freelancers competing for those jobs. If your skill is in creating "merchandisable" goods, the internet can provide you with a low overhead marketplace. If your expertise is in sales/marketing, you can also make a substantial living as a distributor, reseller or wholesaler of goods.
Even today, there are still boundless possibilities and plenty of room for new entrepreneurs on the Web. As with any business, the keys to success are careful planning and intelligent execution.
